"Andrea rocks! Her presentations were clear, strong, articulate, and very thought provoking for all ages, I think." (Shantih Bisland-Becktell, YWCA)
Andrea presents on a wide range of topics including media ownership, health disparities, gender stereotypes, racial stereotypes, and on media literacy as a substance abuse prevention strategy. She has also facilitated numerous anti-oppression workshops and believes media literacy is a tool for media justice.
She is equally effective facilitating small group discussions, presenting in a middle school classroom, or delivering a conference keynote address. She works to customize presentations and workshops to fit the needs of each audience. In addition to her public speaking and training, Andrea has developed custom media literacy curricula for the Albuquerque Public Schools and Community Technology Centers Network.
"Andrea did a fabulous job. The audience consisted of many students with behavior disorders. She was extremely professional and handled their behaviors like a pro." (Ramona Martinez, Pojoaque High School)
|
"Andrea is a very capable and engaging presenter. It isn’t easy to capture the attention of 180 14-yr-olds at the end of the school day…but, she did!" (Karen Morrison, Tibbetts Middle School, Farmington)
Prior to joining NMMLP, Andrea provided community education in a variety of settings -- including schools, juvenile detention facilities, substance abuse treatment centers, community organizations, and professional conferences -- on issues related to sexual assault, child sexual abuse, bullying, dating violence, anti-homophobia, and anti-racism. She also facilitated trainings for rape crisis volunteers and staff, and trained volunteer presenters for a rape crisis speakers’ bureau. Andrea has co-founded a number of community organizing projects in New Mexico, including Young Women United, a community organizing project by and for young women of color in southeast Albuquerque.
Andrea holds a Masters degree in Art History from the University of New Mexico.
“Andrea is amazingly effective with middle school 8th graders. She chose her media examples well, kept my students’ attention, and garnered a new spirit of advocacy from many of them." (Claudia Miller, Alameda Middle School, Santa Fe)
