NMMLP STAFF SERVICE THOUSANDS IN PREPARATION FOR DTV DEADLINE

New Mexico Media Literacy Project has been busy providing support for the Digital Television (DTV) Transition. As part of those efforts, NMMLP staff participated with the FCC and others at events in New Mexico cities such as Albuquerque, Silver City, and Santa Teresa/Sunland Park.

In Albuquerque on June 5th, NMMLP partnered with local Univision affiliate KLUZ to provide a DTV Action Event with approximately 1,000 people in attendance to sign up for the government's $40 converter box coupons, trade valid coupons for a “no cost” converter box, and receive information on how to schedule free basic home installation of their boxes and antennas.

On May 22nd, New Mexico Media Literacy Project teamed with DISH Network and the FCC to hand out almost 150 “no cost” converter boxes. In addition, over 100 people registered for NMMLP's DTV Converter Box Raffle.

On May 27-28, NMMLP staff and the FCC visited the southern New Mexico cities of Silver City and Santa Teresa/Sunland Park to conduct workshops and answer questions about converter boxes, how to sign up for $40 coupons, and about the June 12 transition deadline.

NMMLP has been performing much of this work as a member of the Media Action Grassroots Network (MAG-Net) -- an emerging coalition of regional organizations working together to build a movement for media justice and communications rights.

NMMLP OFFERS NEW LGBTQI RESOURCE: A MOVEMENT, NOT A MARKET

A Movement, Not A Market is a multimedia educational resource on media literacy, the portrayal of the LGBTQI community in media, and the targeting of the LGBTQI community with tobacco and alcohol products.

This DVD-ROM can help improve the ability to access, analyze, evaluate, and produce media messages, and to become an active participant in our media culture. This resource contains 52 media examples (from TV shows, films, magazines, and counter-marketing campaigns), a printable discussion guide, and handouts.

A Movement, Not A Market
can be used in classrooms, community groups, and other group settings to:

- understand media literacy in the context of alcohol and tobacco prevention.

- gain more awareness regarding the marketing of tobacco and alcohol products to the LGBTQI community.

- explore portrayals of the LGBTQI community in the media.

This resource is FREE thanks to a grant from the New Mexico Department of Health's Tobacco Use Prevention and Control Program. Visit our website to order this DVD-ROM with free shipping.

NOW ACCEPTING REGISTRATION FOR THE 2009 CATALYST INSTITUTE

catalystWe are excited to announce NMMLP will host the 2009 Catalyst Institute on July 8-9 at Albuquerque Academy. This Catalyst Institute will feature an intensive two-day introduction to media literacy concepts and skills with an emphasis on financial literacy and marketing during the recession.  We have shortened the training to two days to provide a more economical option for long-distance travelers while maintaining the high quality of training expected from NMMLP.

After hosting over 40 Catalyst Institutes, we recognize the demand for media literacy training and the need for particular media literacy topics that reflect the social, political, and economic landscape of our culture.  As such, the agenda and format of our Catalyst Institute will change each year.
